Review:
Easily one of the best books I've read this year. Weir's writing is articulate and hilarious with lots of sass, wit and science. I laughed out loud countless times and dog-eared multiple pages (most of which contains my favorite Jazz moments). This book also got me through a gruelling 4-hour flight which adds to how great this book was because I am horrible at reading on airplanes. Admit it, we all get a little pretentious at times and we tell ourselves that we'll read a book on the plane but do we ever get around to doing so? Not for me, no. But this book just changed history! Woop! Artemis is legitimately the very first book to ever get me through travelling and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. I only got around to about 70 pages before we landed, and even then I couldn't stop thinking about the book!
However, about halfway through the book the plot diverted out of nowhere. BUT it stayed true to the initial storyline, meaning we are still getting what the blurb promises, which is important (at least to me) because the blurb was what got me hooked in the first place. We have snarky, very relatable and vulgar characters (especially Jazz, the main character. Gosh I adore her) and a thrilling plot line to compliment them. And of course, what good is a book without proper character development? We get bits and pieces of Jazz's relevant past and what has made her who she is, which gave her so much more complexity and flesh to the eyes of the reader. I see so much of myself in Jazz and even if you don't find yourself connecting with her you will still admire her intelligence, resourcefulness and determination.
What a ride this book was. Honestly if this messy gush of a book review isn't enough to convince you to READ ARTEMIS I don't know what is. Now I am just itching to read more of Weir's novels. I've watched The Martian but I think I might just pick up the novel too. I need moreeee!
